Xbox Is Giving Away Free 25th Anniversary Gamerpics, Themes, and a Digital Badge — Here’s How to Claim Them

Xbox kicked off its 25th anniversary celebration on August 3, 2026, with a free digital drop for every player: a limited-time profile badge, community-made gamerpics, and a dynamic console theme — no purchase, code, or subscription required.

What you get, and how to claim it

Signing in to your Xbox account on console, PC, or the Xbox mobile app now automatically grants the 25th Anniversary profile badge, marking the years 2001–2026. Microsoft says the badge stays claimable through December 31, 2026, so there’s no rush — but it won’t show up until you’ve signed in at least once during the promotion.

Alongside the badge, Xbox released a set of new gamerpics, backgrounds, and a dynamic console theme designed with community artists Klobrille and Ben Kenobi — two creators known in the Xbox fan community for console-skin and UI concept art. Unlike the badge, these customization items have to be applied manually:

• On console: Settings > Profile & system > Customize profile for the gamerpic and theme; Settings > General > Personalization > My background > Dynamic background for the animated backdrop.
• On PC: Open the Xbox app, go to your profile, and use the pencil icon to swap your gamerpic or open Customize profile to apply the new theme.

Why Xbox is doing this now

The freebies are the opening move in a longer rollout building toward Xbox’s actual 25th anniversary on November 15, 2026 — the date the original console launched in North America in 2001, going up against Sony’s PlayStation 2 and, a year later, Nintendo’s GameCube. Microsoft is marking the milestone with a curated series of Xbox Game Pass collections that pull together landmark games from every console generation — original Xbox, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S — playable on console and/or PC. Titles confirmed for the tribute lineup include Fable Anniversary, Halo: The Master Chief Collection, Fallout 4, and Psychonauts 2.

Microsoft also confirmed the full schedule for its in-person FanFest tour, along with sweepstakes details tied to the stops, running in the lead-up to November. It’s a lower-stakes echo of what Xbox did around the translucent-green 25th Anniversary console redesign announced earlier this summer — that was a paid limited-edition hardware drop, while this week’s badge and customization pack cost nothing and require no purchase at all.

What’s next

Expect more anniversary content to land in stages between now and November: Microsoft has signaled additional community design collaborations and Game Pass curation drops as the FanFest tour progresses, on top of whatever’s already rotating through the August Game Pass lineup. None of it has been tied to a specific console or subscription purchase so far — the badge and customization items are open to any signed-in Xbox account, including free Xbox app and cloud users.

If you use an Xbox profile anywhere — console, PC, or mobile — the badge shows up automatically the next time you sign in. The gamerpics and theme take a couple of extra taps, but neither requires anything beyond an existing Xbox account. Given how Microsoft has paced the rest of this celebration — a steady drip of announcements rather than one single reveal — it’s worth checking back on the Xbox app and Xbox Wire periodically through the fall for whatever comes next.
