Most of the “AI features” on your phone are a chatbot wearing a search engine’s clothes — and you’ve probably already figured that out, even if the keynote convinced you otherwise for a week. The industry sold an assistant that understands your life. What actually shipped is a handful of narrow, genuinely useful shortcuts buried inside a pile of features nobody opens twice.
Here’s the claim: of everything marketed as “phone AI” in 2026 — Apple Intelligence, Samsung’s Galaxy AI, Google’s Gemini on Pixel and Android — maybe three or four features per platform get used daily. The rest exist to justify the word “AI” on a spec sheet. That’s not a hot take; it’s what the usage data and the reviews, once you strip out the keynote language, actually say.
What People Actually Use
Start with the features that survive contact with real life. Circle to Search — the ability to draw a loop around anything on screen, mid-video or mid-scroll, and search it without leaving the app — comes up repeatedly as one of the few AI features people report using every single day. It’s not flashy. It’s not “intelligent” in any deep sense. It’s a shortcut that removes a screenshot-and-switch-apps step, and it works exactly the same way every time.
Transcription is the other real winner. Notice the pattern: every feature that survives is a narrow, task-specific tool, not a general “understands you” assistant.
The Marketing Says “Assistant.” The Reality Says “Search Shortcut.”
Apple Intelligence is the clearest case study in overselling, because Apple is usually the company that ships features late but polished — and here it shipped roughly on time and unpolished. Coverage from GSMArena and TechRadar describes it as “nearly” catching up to what Google already offers on Pixel, with Siri specifically still frustrating users while Apple pushes a fuller AI rebuild to iOS 27. Tim Cook has publicly maintained the company is making “good progress.” The press covering the actual shipped product describes something closer to an embarrassment for a company that built its reputation on not shipping half-finished things.
Google’s story is more interesting because the numbers themselves conflict. Gemini reportedly crossed 750 million monthly active users by Q4 2025, up 30% quarter over quarter — a genuinely large adoption number Google is right to promote. But the same reporting period includes rumors that the base Pixel 11 may ship with RAM insufficient to actually run full on-device Gemini Intelligence. You can’t build your flagship marketing around an AI experience the flagship phone itself might struggle to run.
And the mindshare data undercuts the usage data further: Pew Research found 59% of U.S. teens have used ChatGPT, against just 23% for Gemini — despite Gemini’s much larger reported active-user count on Android devices. Big adoption numbers on a platform you can’t avoid (Gemini is baked into stock Android) aren’t the same thing as people choosing to reach for it.

Why OEMs Keep Selling It Anyway
None of this is a mystery once you look at why the marketing exists in the first place. Phone hardware has been effectively commoditized for years — this year’s flagship camera, screen, and chipset are all incremental over last year’s, and the average buyer genuinely can’t tell a 2025 flagship from a 2026 one in a side-by-side test. AI is the one category where a company can claim a clean, headline-grabbing “first” or “biggest,” even when the underlying feature set is thin. It’s differentiation theater for a hardware category that stopped meaningfully differentiating.
That’s also why the language keeps escalating even as the actual feature list stays narrow. Once Samsung calls something “Galaxy AI,” Apple and Google can’t call the equivalent feature a “smart shortcut” without looking like they’re behind — so the whole industry inflates its vocabulary in lockstep, regardless of what’s actually running on the chip. It’s the same dynamic that turned “smart” into a meaningless prefix on thermostats and light bulbs a decade ago, just with a bigger budget behind it this time.
Devil’s Advocate: Some of This Is Genuinely Early, Not Fake
The fair counterargument is that AI assistants are a young product category being judged by mature-product standards. Voice assistants took nearly a decade to go from novelty to reliable, and even now Siri, Alexa, and Google Assistant get mocked regularly for misfires. Circle to Search and transcription tools didn’t exist five years ago in any form this good — that’s real progress, not marketing smoke. It’s also true that a chunk of “AI” branding overlap is unavoidable: once one OEM calls a feature “AI-powered,” competitors have to use the same language or look outdated on a spec sheet, even when the underlying feature is a modest, sensible tool.
That’s a real point, and it complicates the cynical read. But it doesn’t rescue the marketing. A young category being oversold is still being oversold — the honest version of the pitch would be “here are three or four things this makes faster,” not “meet your phone’s new brain.”
So Is It Worth Caring About?
If you’re buying a phone in 2026, don’t let “AI features” move the decision on their own. Check whether the specific narrow tools — Circle to Search, transcription, live translation — matter to how you actually use a phone, and treat everything else in the AI section of the spec sheet as a rounding error. Upgrade cycles are still driven by broken hardware, battery degradation, and carrier deals, not by which company’s assistant demo looked more impressive on stage. That’s the actual state of the “AI phone” category right now: three genuinely good features, a lot of noise, and marketing copy still years ahead of what’s running on the silicon in your pocket.
