Amazon’s New Alexa Tablets Run Android. How Long Will Your Fire Tablet Get Security Updates?

Amazon's help page promises Fire tablets security updates for at least four years from an Amazon purchase, or until a fixed date per model if later. The dates run from January 2029 to July 2030; older models are not in the table.

On October 8, Amazon introduced a new line of tablets under the Alexa name: the Alexa Tablet 8, Alexa Tablet 11 and Alexa Tablet 12 Pro. According to Amazon’s announcement, they “run Android, and come with access to the full Google Play Store.” Fire tablets run Amazon’s own Fire OS, and CNBC reported the same day that Amazon is no longer manufacturing new Fire units.

If you own a Fire tablet, or you were about to buy a discounted one, the practical question is how long it will keep getting security fixes. Amazon publishes the answer on a help page, and the rule it describes differs from the shorter version that circulated with the launch coverage. Here is what that page says as of October 12, 2026, and how to work out the date that applies to your tablet.

What Amazon actually promises Fire tablet owners

Amazon’s Fire Tablet Device Software Security Updates page sets two clocks and gives you whichever ends later:

  • Bought new from Amazon: security updates “until at least four years from when you bought it new, from Amazon as the seller, on Amazon.com (or until the date stated below if later).”
  • Bought anywhere else: “we’ll support it with software security updates until at least the date stated below.” The page’s FAQ points owners of refurbished units, and of devices bought from other sellers on Amazon.com, to the same table or to the Manage Your Devices section of their Amazon account.

Three limits are written into the same page. The promise is about security updates; the page does not commit to new features or new Fire OS versions. After the guaranteed period, Amazon says it “may continue to provide software security updates for as long as we can (subject to technical and other limitations).” And it adds that “the update period is not a guarantee as to how long your device will last.”

Launch coverage summarized the policy differently. CNBC reported that Amazon “will continue to support the Fire lineup for four years after the final shipment” and that owners “can continue using their devices as they do today.” That is not the wording on Amazon’s help page, which counts from your purchase date or a fixed date per model. Until Amazon publishes something new, we treat the help page as the written policy, because it is the one that names dates.

The guaranteed dates, model by model

The table below reproduces the dates on Amazon’s page. Amazon identifies its tablets by generation and release year, so find your exact model in Manage Your Devices before reading across.

Fire tablet (as Amazon names it) Security updates at least through
Fire Max 11 (Generation 13, 2023 release) July 31, 2030
Fire HD 10, HD 10 Kids, HD 10 Kids Pro (Generation 13, 2023 release) December 31, 2029
Fire HD 8, HD 8 Plus, HD 8 Kids (Generation 12, 2024 release) December 31, 2029
Fire 7, Fire 7 Kids (Generation 12, 2022 release) December 31, 2029
Fire HD 8 Plus (Generation 12, 2022 release) July 30, 2029
Fire HD 8, HD 8 Kids, HD 8 Kids Pro (Generation 12, 2022 release) January 28, 2029

Every model in the table is a 12th- or 13th-generation tablet. Older models, such as the 11th-generation Fire HD 10, are not in it, even though Amazon’s Fire tablet software update page still lists Fire OS 7 downloads for them. For those, the security page sends owners to the Manage Your Devices section of their Amazon account “for information specific to your device.” Check there before assuming either way.

When the four-year rule gives you more time

The four-year clock only matters if it ends after the date in the table. Working backward from Amazon’s dates, these are the purchase dates after which a tablet bought new from Amazon, with Amazon as the seller, gets the longer window:

Model Table date Bought new from Amazon after this date? Four years from purchase wins
Fire HD 8 family (2022 release) January 28, 2029 January 28, 2025
Fire HD 8 Plus (2022 release) July 30, 2029 July 30, 2025
Fire HD 10 family, Fire HD 8 family (2024 release), Fire 7 family December 31, 2029 December 31, 2025
Fire Max 11 July 31, 2030 July 31, 2026

By that arithmetic, any of these tablets bought new from Amazon in October 2026 is covered until at least October 2030, later than every date in the table. The same tablet bought at another retailer, or from a third-party seller on Amazon.com, gets only the table date. If you are buying a leftover Fire tablet now, the seller on the order matters as much as the price. Keep the order confirmation: it is the record of your start date.

The page carries a leftover from an earlier version of the policy. Its FAQ still defines “last available for purchase,” a phrase the main text no longer uses. In a 2021 explainer, Liliputing reported that Amazon’s promise then ran four years from the last date a tablet was sold new on Amazon.com. The current text counts from your purchase instead.

What changes, and what does not, for Fire owners

  • Your tablet keeps working. CNBC reported Amazon’s statement that owners can keep using their devices as they do today. Nothing in Amazon’s announcement or help pages says Fire tablets stop working on a set date.
  • Amazon Kids+ still covers Fire tablets. Amazon’s Kids Tablets announcement says the subscription “works across a wide range of compatible devices,” and lists Fire tablets among them.
  • The software split widens. The new Alexa tablets run Android with the Google Play Store, while Amazon’s update page lists Fire OS 8 for the 12th- and 13th-generation Fire models and Fire OS 7 for older ones. Apps from Google Play are part of the new tablets, not something the announcement promises for Fire models.

Amazon’s October 8 announcement gives the new lineup’s prices (from $229.99 for the Alexa Tablet 8 to $549.99 for the Alexa Tablet 12 Pro with the anti-glare Nanomatte display) and says the tablets ship October 14, 2026, in the US, Mexico and Canada. It does not state how long the new tablets will receive security updates. If that matters to your decision, look for a software security update period on the product listing before you order, the same way Amazon spells it out for Fire tablets.

What to do with the tablet you have

Your situation What it means
Your model is in Amazon’s table You have a written date, at least January 2029. Keep automatic updates on; there is no reason to replace it for security reasons yet.
You bought it new from Amazon after the cutoffs above Your date is four years from purchase. Find the order date and add four years.
Your model is older and not in the table Check Manage Your Devices in your Amazon account for that device’s status before using it for banking, email or a child’s accounts.
You are deciding between a leftover Fire tablet and a new Alexa tablet A Fire tablet comes with a known security date. The new tablets bring Android and Google Play, but the announcement gives no update period, so check the listing.

Fire tablets are not the only devices where the support date matters more than the spec sheet. We looked at the same question for Chromebooks and for Windows 10 PCs, and our guide to securing smart home devices covers what to do once a device stops getting fixes.

How we checked: we read Amazon’s Fire tablet security update and software update help pages, Amazon’s October 8 announcements of the Alexa and Kids tablets, CNBC’s report on the launch, Quartz’s follow-up, and Liliputing’s 2021 explainer of the earlier policy. The purchase cutoffs are our arithmetic from Amazon’s published dates. DecodeGear did not test the new tablets.
