Palworld — the “Pokémon with guns” phenomenon that sold tens of millions of copies and dominated 2024 — is finally leaving early access. Version 1.0 launches July 10, 2026 on Steam, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Game Pass, and it is easily the biggest update the game has ever had: it roughly doubles the map, adds the most new Pals of any patch to date, and ships with a reported 27 pages of notes.
If you already own the game, the whole thing is a free update. After two and a half years in early access, this is the version Pocketpair has been building toward — and it lands day one on Game Pass, which is where a lot of new players will meet it.
When it launches and where
Version 1.0 goes live July 10 across Steam, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S, and it’s included with Game Pass on launch day. Existing players don’t pay a cent — it arrives as a free update on top of the game you already have. Your old save files carry over, though Pocketpair is encouraging returning players to start fresh to experience everything 1.0 reworks from the ground up.

The map doubles, and the World Tree opens up
The headline change is scale. Version 1.0 roughly doubles the size of the map, with a fresh region anchored by the long-teased World Tree, a massive central landmark that opens once the update hits. Alongside it comes the largest batch of new Pals the game has ever added in a single update, plus a new Genetic Recombination breeding system that gives dedicated players far more control over the traits they pass down.
There’s new gear to match the new ground: additional weapons and armor, a Wing Pack that lets your character glide across the expanded world, and more Pals that transform into weapons mid-combat. For a game whose whole hook is blurring the line between creature-collector and shooter, that last one is very on-brand.
Reworked bosses, living sanctuaries, and a real story
Two of the game’s weaker systems got overhauled. The Tower Boss battles have been reworked to be more dynamic and engaging rather than damage-sponge slogs, and Sanctuaries — previously fairly generic — now each have their own unique ecosystem, with distinct landscapes, rare Pals, special materials, and their own bosses.
Maybe the most meaningful shift is narrative. Palworld launched as a sandbox with almost no story; 1.0 adds dedicated story-driven missions that finally pull back the curtain on the island’s mysteries, with polished older zones and vast new areas to explore. It’s a real attempt to give the survival loop a spine, which is exactly what long-time players have been asking for.
Should you jump back in?
If you bounced off Palworld in its rougher early days, 1.0 is the natural moment to return — and since it’s free for owners and on Game Pass for everyone else, the barrier to trying it is about as low as it gets. New players get the most complete version by far; returning ones get a fresh save’s worth of reasons to rebuild.
The one wrinkle worth flagging: while your old save technically carries over, Pocketpair is nudging veterans to start a brand-new game to see everything 1.0 changes, since a lot of the reworked systems and story beats are woven into early progression. Whether a fresh start is worth losing your existing base is the kind of decision only a returning player can make — but with the map doubled and a new region to settle, there’s a strong argument for a clean slate.
It’s also a notable milestone for one of the most-watched studios in gaming. Palworld went from viral lightning-in-a-bottle to a genuine full release, and it’s one of the titles we flagged in our rundown of the biggest games coming in 2026 and 2027. If your July is already crowded, it’s sharing the month with another huge launch — our look at Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced covers the other pirate-sized release competing for your time. And with so many of this year’s big games landing on subscription services, it’s worth remembering how that’s quietly reshaping what we actually pay for games.
