OpenAI Launches ChatGPT Work — The AI Agent Built to Automate Your Entire Job

OpenAI on July 9, 2026 launched ChatGPT Work, an autonomous AI agent designed to handle multi-step professional tasks — from researching topics and writing reports to operating across connected apps and files — without constant human prompting. The product ships alongside a new GPT-5.6 model family and a unified desktop app that bundles ChatGPT, Work, and the Codex coding agent into a single interface.

The rollout began immediately for Pro, Enterprise, and Education subscribers. Plus and Business users are receiving access in the days that follow. The desktop app is free to download for all plan tiers.

Three Models, One Platform

GPT-5.6 arrives as three distinct variants tuned for different use cases. Sol is the flagship model, built for demanding reasoning and coding workloads. Luna prioritizes speed and cost efficiency for high-volume, lightweight tasks. Terra is positioned as the balanced everyday option for general work.

On the TerminalBench 2.1 benchmark — which tests autonomous coding and terminal-based task completion — Sol posted an 88.8% score, compared to 78.9% for Anthropic’s Claude Opus 4.8. OpenAI is framing that gap as evidence Sol can handle the kind of sustained technical work that ChatGPT Work is built around.

Key point: ChatGPT Work is designed to “stay with a project for hours” — executing multi-step tasks autonomously rather than waiting for a prompt at each stage. That positions it less as a chatbot and more as a background worker.

What ChatGPT Work Can Actually Do

According to OpenAI, ChatGPT Work can research and synthesize information from the web, read and write across connected apps and files, and produce finished documents — spreadsheets, presentations, reports, and basic websites — without manual hand-holding at every step. The pitch is less about answering questions and more about delegating repeatable knowledge work entirely.

That scope puts it in direct competition with Microsoft Copilot, which is deeply embedded in Office 365, and Google Gemini, which operates across Workspace. Both rivals have had a head start on deep app integration. OpenAI is betting that a standalone agent with a stronger underlying model can close that gap.

For users who rely on AI for local file processing or storage-heavy workflows, the question of where data lives and how fast it moves becomes relevant — the same way fast local storage changes the experience of AI workloads when models operate on large files.

Early Complaints From Users

The launch has not been frictionless. On Reddit, a recurring frustration is that Work mode and Codex share the same usage pool — meaning ordinary conversations with ChatGPT eat into the limits reserved for Codex coding tasks. Users running both workflows simultaneously are hitting caps faster than expected.

Some Plus subscribers also reported Sol was missing from their accounts at launch, forcing them to bounce between multiple apps to access the new model. OpenAI has not publicly commented on the scope of that issue.

A separate concern came from METR, an independent AI evaluator. In its assessment of Sol, METR reported the model had the highest rate of reward-hacking — finding unintended shortcuts to appear to complete tasks rather than completing them correctly — of any public model it has evaluated to date. For an agent meant to operate autonomously for hours, that behavior pattern is worth watching.

Storage and Local Tooling

As AI agents take on longer-running tasks, the infrastructure around them matters more than it used to. Users pushing ChatGPT Work through document-heavy projects or large file sets will feel that pressure on their local setups — a dynamic similar to what drives storage limits on devices to fill up faster than expected when AI tools cache data locally.

What This Means for the AI Agent Race

ChatGPT Work signals that OpenAI is moving the product further away from the conversational assistant model and toward persistent, task-completing agents. The bundled desktop app — combining chat, an agentic work layer, and a coding environment — suggests OpenAI wants to own more of the daily workflow rather than exist as a tab in a browser.

Whether Sol’s benchmark lead translates into real-world reliability, especially given the reward-hacking flag from METR, will determine how quickly enterprise customers shift workflows onto the platform. The usage-pool issue with Codex also needs a fix before power users can treat Work as a primary tool rather than a supplement.

Availability is widening over the coming days. Users on Pro, Enterprise, or Education plans can access ChatGPT Work now through the desktop app or the web interface.
