The sets draw more power to light all those pixels, the model selection is thin and skewed expensive, and you often give up features or panel quality that a 4K set in the same price bracket includes as standard. The devil’s advocate: when might 8K make sense?

To be fair, there’s a narrow case for it. If you’re buying an enormous screen — 85 inches or larger — and you sit fairly close to it, 8K’s extra density can start to matter, keeping the image smooth instead of soft. There’s also a “future-proofing” argument: buy now, and maybe in five years the content will exist.
